Lockdown Hair Care
Keep your hair healthy during lockdown
Self-care is important during these tough times to help reduce anxiety, keep our spirits & moods lifted and to keep a sense of normality. What better way to start than with your hair!
It’s probably the perfect time to give your hair a rest from the heat stress of hairdryers & hot tools & get your hair in great condition. Over use of heat can damage & dry out your hair and can compromise your colour, causing it to fade. If you need to use heat, keep it to a minimum, and always use a heat protector like KEVIN.MURPHY’S HEATED.DEFENSE. Also, when drying, try not to hold the hair dryer too close to the lengths & ends of your hair to prevent split, fluffy ends.
Wash & rinse
We only recommend to use sulphate & paraben free shampoo & conditioners. Sulphates are a harsh foaming detergent found in cheaper brands (and household cleaners) which are designed to strip away grease. They can contribute towards:
- Stripping & fading the colour from your hair
- Overly dry or oily scalps
- Frizz
- Hair loss by corroding follicles
Parabens are a cheap way to prolong the shelf life of products. These are thought to be damaging to our health and interfere with hormone production!
Using a salon standard shampoo & conditioner is more expensive, but the ingredients are far more advanced and kinder to your hair, scalp & body so the benefits far outweigh the costs. Plus, they are heavily concentrated so you actually use less product in comparison to supermarket branded shampoos and will last if used correctly.
Tips on shampooing
- Always shampoo
twice. The first will break up any environmental & product build up that
may be coating your hair & scalp which could creating a barrier. Ideally this initial wash would be with a detoxifying & stimulating shampoo.
- Once the build-up &
residue has been rinsed away, your hair & scalp is then ready to receive essential nutrients from the second shampoo and will leave your hair clean & nourished. Choose a shampoo that's specifically for your hair type such as a hydrating, volumising or smoothing wash etc.
Tips on
conditioning
- Once the hair has been cleansed of dirt & oils, remove excess water from your hair before conditioning. Excess water prevents the conditioner from penetrating the hair shaft & stops your hair from soaking up the moisture & goodness.
- Only apply conditioner to your mid-lengths & ends as these areas become drier quicker. Your root area already benefits from natural oils, and conditioner may also weigh down & flatten your hair.
- Use just enough to lightly coat your hair and massage in.
Include a weekly treatment in your hair care regime
To compliment your sulphate & paraben free shampoo & conditioner, include a masque treatment in your hair care regime once a week to really give your hair a boost of health, condition and shine. After shampooing, apply your masque & work into your hair & leave it on for up to 10 minutes (or longer if required). Perfect for a bit of relaxing & unwinding in the bath with a good book or glass of wine! For added luxury, wrap a hot towel around your head to open up the hair cuticle, allowing the treatment to penetrate further.
